Chinchilla Foods They Can Eat

What can Chinchillas eat? What is the best diet for them? Chinchilla foods mostly consist of; hay, greens and fibre. and these foods will help them stay healthy. However there are also foods that will make them ill. Chinchilla’s are herbivores and herbivores normally eat plants and grasses. Chinchilla’s eat a lot of greens that is plants and grasses. When feeding them, ensure that their diet should be high in fibre and protein and low in fat and anything that has to do with moisture to avoid illness. It should have about 35 percent carbohydrates, 30 percent fibre, 4 percent sugar, 15 percent protein and about 3.5 percent fat.

Within their natural habitat, a chinchilla chews the bark of trees. When they last fibre in their meals, their teeth would become overgrown which could lead to what is called fur chewing. A low diet in fibre will also disrupt their digestion. Meanwhile, excess fat in the diet of the Chinchilla, can cause liver damage.

Chinchillas eat varieties of vegetation although plants that are too lush might upset their system. So the quantities of these plants should be regulated. For best Chinchilla food, a constant supply of hay is highly recommended. Hay should make up most of their diet. Chinchillas digestive systems need hay and grasses to stay very healthy. Just as humans can become sick when they don’t take water, Chinchillas can become extremely ill when they don’t take water. So they need constant access to clean healthy drinking water. If you must keep the water clean, then you must use a drinking bottle.

What Fruits and Vegetables Can Chinchillas Eat?

The following group of vegetables can also make up the majority of a Chinchillas diet.

  1. Carrot.
  2. Alfalfa.
  3. Kale.
  4. Squash.
  5. Sweet potatoes.
  6. Celery.
  7. Potatoes.

Chinchillas also need about a tea spoon per day of fresh greens. Greens are important to their system. Fruits are also very important and Chinchillas can eat small amount of fruit such as;

  1. Apples.
  2. Sultan’s.
  3. Raisins.
  4. Blueberries.
  5. Grapes.

Can Chinchillas Eat Rabbit Food?

Rabbits and Chinchillas have different dietary needs. So the best thing to avoid giving Chinchillas is, rabbit food pellets. And before you feed your Chinchillas rabbit food, the food must have been labelled as safe for Chinchillas. If the pellet is safe, you can feed your pet with two table spoons of pellets per day, preferably one in the morning and one at night because Chinchillas tend to be more active around midnight.

What Are the Treats That Chinchillas Like?

They like small amounts of dried fruit and root vegetables like, raisins, sultanas and carrots. Nits and seeds are also regarded as treats for them but u must be conscious about not feeding them with too much fats? Control the kind of treats you give them so that they will not become overweight which can lead to illness.

In conclusion, Chinchillas have sensitive stomachs, so everything should be given to them very moderately. Don’t give them too much fruits and vegetables because it can cause diarrhoea. Treats that are higher in sugar and fat can cause liver damage and weight gain. Chinchillas shouldn’t eat, cabbage, nuts, banana, corn, peas, spinach, broccoli, peas, lettuce, sunflower seeds, rhubarb leaves, avocado, asparagus. Just ensure that they are eating and drinking every day and passing out dry droppings. This is one way of knowing that they are healthy. Don’t suddenly introduce a dietary change because it can make them ill by doing such. Always ensure that they have clean drinking water with plenty of hay to eat. You can replace the hay when they become mouldy. Replace them with fresh hay or Chinchilla foods.
